The man named his wife Eve—“Life-Giver,” because she would become the mother of every human being.
GENESIS 3:20
Adam proved his faith by naming his wife Eve (“living” or “life-giver”). He could have called her “the mother of all the dying.” Yet, faith believed the words God had spoken about the seed of the woman. Adam received the prophecy of the cross in his heart, and he named his wife, Eve, “life-giver.” By giving her this name, Adam sealed this covenant and confirmed the promise of God.
Adam changed her name from “Woman” to Eve, the first of many name changes in the Bible. The Hebrew contains a pun, or paronomasia, with the name Eve, for her name havvah is very similar to the word for life (khayah, or “living one”). God gave the woman an ability not just to have babies, but also to release life in a variety of expressions. Eve brought life into the structure of Adam’s world. What does the Scripture tell us about a woman? She is God’s chosen ’ezer (Genesis 2:18), a protector, provider, and strength for a man. Secondly, she is taken from man, equally a partner under the Lord and perfectly matched for re-union as one. Thirdly, she is the carrier of life for all humanity. A woman enfolds all three roles in one person.
Why did God not name Adam “Father of all the living”? Because that would be a title that could only belong to God. The Creator took Adam from the earth, but our Father dwells in heaven. There is an ache for a father that someone made from earth cannot fully satisfy. We must come to know our Creator as our Father.
LAMBSKIN
“Yahweh-God made garments from animal skins to clothe Adam and Eve” (Genesis 3:21). The Creator acted as their priest and provided the sacrifice to cover their sin. God had to strip away their fabricated covering and cover them with his own. Perhaps God took a lamb, hung it on a tree before their eyes, and removed its fleece to clothe this fallen pair. Their first sight of death was an innocent sacrifice killed for them. Animal skins … it’s as though the Father was saying that man’s nature is closer to an animal’s than to God. The fall marred the beautiful image he gave them. Wearing the skin of a beast reveals man’s heart as beast-like. The mark of the beast came on Adam and Eve in the garden.
In the form of a tree, the tree of life, God offered himself to man as food, food that would bring them life. But man refused and fell into sin so that once again God provided a covering in the form of a Lamb. As Adam rested in the Lamb as his clothing, his covering, he could still live. God the Father revealed the first drop of blood man saw providing their salvation. By this illustration, God taught Adam and Eve about the cross, salvation, and the need for a substitute. Mercy sought to spare the sinner, but justice required an innocent substitute.
